You’ve heard of spring cleaning, but what about a deep cleaning in the fall? When the weather starts cooling down, it means that the holiday season is soon approaching. You will be so busy during the upcoming months that you won’t have time to breathe. Why not throw open the windows and doors, and grab a trash can; fall is the perfect time to start focusing on the chore list.
One of the first things you should do is take inventory in your home. Is the broom falling apart? Did Junior run off with the dustpan again? Make a list of all the things that you need. Is your punch bowl from last year going to make it through another holiday season? Once you have your list, you know how to budget for the family’s needs. You won’t have time to be running around trying to find a specific bowl when the seasonal rush is in full swing. Take this time to get a list together.
Clean Out The Cabinets
You know there’s something lurking in the back of those cabinets that needs to be thrown away. Get the whole family involved in getting the cabinets in shape (or if you’re looking at getting some new cabinets, be sure to read our article on how to choose a good cabinet color here). Donate any old cookware to a local thrift shop, and perhaps consider upgrading your set during the sales. Anything you haven’t touched in the past six months should be donated or pitched. Don’t be afraid to throw something away either. The “less is more” philosophy is definitely an appealing lifestyle.
Clean Behind The Appliances
Okay, if you were being totally honest, you would say that you probably don’t remember the last time you pulled out the stove and fridge to clean. There is probably dust bunnies the size of a small animal behind there. Pull out the stove and wash down the back from any grease or debris. Be sure to mop the floor good back there too. The refrigerator might have a drainage pan or tube that needs to be emptied. Wipe the fridge from top to bottom too. It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.
Additionally, it is a good time to check your plumbing too. Are there any leaks that you have failed to take care of? Your plumbing should be in top shape for the cold season. The last thing you need is a pipe bursting at the most inopportune time. It won’t take long, but you can have a house that is sparkling clean and ready for guests.
